What is Sericulture ?
Culture of Sericin (a protein Compound) is known as sericulture, which joins fibroin (another protein compound) threads with each other.Rearing of silk and production of silk is also known as sericulture.
Kinds of Silk:
1. Mulberry
2. Tasar
3. Eri and
4. Muga
Except muga silk all three types are being reared at different places of Jharkhand State .
Eri and Tasar Silks are being controlled by state Seri- Eri Unit , Ranchi and central silk Board ,nagri ,Ranchi .respectively.
Why Sericulture:- Mulberry sericulture is much more beneficial than any other crops produced in upland areas i.e. Tarn the comparative advantages of having sericulture are:-
Plants once raised will survive upto 15-25 years.
Three crops in a year is being in operation . Silkworm rearing is being conducted thrice ie March, Aug, Oct, each year
Indoor reanig of silkworm provides more safety .
Employment is provided for whole Family members.
Earning can be increased up to 12000/- per annum, per acre.
Part of Sericulture:- It is an agro based cottage industry . It requires
1.Plantation
2.Rearing of Silk worms
3. Cocoon production & processing .
Ist & IInd will be done by farmers .
A. Plantation :-
-
Land selection : It requires Tarn No.1, upland, to same extent loam or sandy loam soil.
-
PH - Best growth of mulberry plants occur at 6.8 to 7.2 PH. Acidic soil of this area needs at least 3 quintals lime per acre in this area.
Land preparation :-
Proper ploughing is needed .Pits can be prepared in 3’X3’ distance plant to plant and row to row. Pits size 1’X1’X1’( length x breadth x depth). One acre unit : 4840 pits and plants. Plantation will be done mainly through cuttings /saplings. Per pit 3 cuttings of 9”is required while single saplings per pit is needed. Pits filling will consists of 2 kg compost, 10-20 gms insecticides (antitermites ) and 100-150 gm karnj cake. Cuttings 3 part will be inside soil and one part will remain above soil.
Plantation with proper package of practices will come out for rearing in nine months . Plantation will be raised in Ist monsoon i.e. June-July upto 15th August each year.
B. Rearing :- Rearing appliances data /dagra and chandriki is needed for silk worms rearing. Silk worms after passing through four moults (scale period) and five infants forms the cocoon in thirty days which is being sold @ Rs. 70/-per kg.
Economics:- By raising one acre mulberry plants on third year onward farmers can earn upto 400 dfls per acre /per year (STANDARD). One 100dfls can yield 30-40 kg cocoons,so they can produce 120-160 kg green cocoons. @ Rs .70/- per kg .They can earn Rs .8400/- to 11,200/-
